AL hopefuls dominating the race

MAGURA, May 21: Electioneering for the polls to the four upazilas of Magura districts has gained momentum as the day of voting is approaching.

Elections to the four upazilas- Magura Sadar, Mohammadpur, Shalikha and Sreepur- are scheduled to be held on March 24 in the third phase of the local government body polls.

Initially, ruling Awami League (AL)-fielded chairman candidates are dominating the election race in the four upazilas as BNP is not contesting.

But with the AL deciding not to take action against any of the rebel candidates and their supporters, campaign for election has received a new impetus to three upazilas of the district.

In Magura sadar upazila, AL has nominated Abu Nashir Bablu as its chairman candidate.

There is no rebel candidate of the ruling party in the upazila where Hasan Shiraj Shuja is contesting with Jatiya Party nomination.

Party insiders said upon being a former chairman of Sadar upazila, Abu Nashir Bablu has immense popularity among voters in the upazila.

AL leaders and workers are working for him as he is contesting the race with 'boat' symbol.

On the other hand, though Jatiya Party's position is not organisationally strong in the upazila, Hasan Shuja holds a bright image to the local people.

In Sreepur upazila, AL chairman candidate Pankaj Shaha is a new face in the election battle.

But as he is in the polls race with 'boat' symbol, AL leaders and activists are working relentlessly for his win.

Earlier, Mahumudul Goni had been elected Sreepur Upazila chairman from AL camp.

But failing to get AL ticket, he is contesting the election this time as a rebel candidate.

His plus point in the election is that seven union parishad chairmen in the upazila among the total eight are working for him. As a former upazila chairman, he has immense popularity as well.

In Mohammadpur uapzila, AL nominated chairman candidate Abdul Mannan has a large vote bank.

Abdullahel Baki is the rebel candidate of the ruling party in the upazila.

In Shalikha upazila, AL-fielded chairman aspirant Shyamol Kumar Dey is a former chairman of the upazila.

AL leaders and activists are working for him. But in the last upazila election, BNP which has a large vote bank in the upazila grabbed the chairman post.

Rebel candidate Kamal Hossen is busy trying to draw the BNP vote bank in favour of him.

In the present scenario, the candidates and their supporters in the four upazilas of the district are busy wooing voters.
