Ex-CEC Justice Abdur Rouf dies

CA mourns, HC suspends judicial functions from 2pm

Former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Justice Md Abdur Rouf has passed away while undergoing treatment at Insaf Barakah Kidney and General Hospital in the capital, report agencies.

He was 91.

The former Appellate Division judge breathed his last around 9:55am on Sunday.

His second janaza will be held after Zohr prayers today (Monday) at the National Eidgah ground on the Supreme Court premises.

He will be buried at the family graveyard beside his mother in Mymensingh .

Justice Rouf left behind two sons, a daughter, and a host of relatives and well-wishers to mourn his death.

He served as the country's fifth chief election commissioner from late 1990 to early 1995. He was also chairman of Barakah Foundation.

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep shock and sorrow at the death of Justice Md Abdur Rouf.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman also expressed profound shock at his death.

Meanwhile, the judicial functions of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court remains suspended from 2pm on Sunday in respect to former CEC Justice Mohammad Abdur Rouf.

Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed expressed deep condolence at the death of justice Rouf and conveyed sympathy to his family members.
