A Dhaka court placed former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) K M Nurul Huda on remand for four days on Monday, in connection with a case filed over alleged irregularities during the past national elections.

Judge of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court (CMM Court) in Dhaka, Mohammad Mustafizur Rahman, passed the order after hearing a petition submitted by police to place him on remand.

Earlier in the day, the investigation officer of the case, Shamsuzzoha Sarker, who is also a Sub-Inspector of the Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police Station in the city, produced Nurul Huda in court and submitted a 10-day remand prayer.

Representing the state, Public Prosecutor (PP) Md Omar Faruq Faruqi told the court that Nurul Huda needed to be placed on remand, as he played a vital role in helping Sheikh Hasina build a "fascist regime" in the country.

Nurul Huda conspired and manipulated the national elections in 2018 by taking bribes from Sheikh Hasina, he added.

During the hearing, a defense lawyer told the court that the charges brought against his client were all bailable.

After hearing the parties, the court granted a four-day remand for the former CEC.

Sher-E-Bangla Nagar Police arrested Nurul Huda on Sunday hours after the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) filed a case against 24 individuals, including him, for allegedly holding controversial elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024.

Ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former CECs Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmed and Kazi Habibul Awal, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, and other government officials are on the accused list.

A five-member BNP delegation, led by party executive committee member Salah Uddin Khan, also delivered a copy of the case application to CEC AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission the same day.

The BNP alleges that in all three parliamentary elections in 2014, 2018, and 2024, their leaders and supporters were targeted with false cases, abductions, and threats. Many were arrested or harassed so that they could not take part in the polls.

According to the BNP, the accused in the case were involved in irregularities during the three national elections.
