A Dhaka court has placed former MP Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu on a six-day remand in a case over the killing of businessman Abdul Wadud in the capital's New Market area during the student-led mass upsurge, report agencies.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman passed the order on Tuesday after hearing a petition, said the court's public prosecutor Omar Faruk Faruki.
Earlier investigation officer of the case Jahangir Arif produced the accused before the court with a 10-day remand prayer, he said.
Though the defendant's lawyers appealed for the bail the court rejected it.
Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested former lawmaker and Jatiya Party's central leader Yahya Chowdhury from the capital's Uttar.
A media release, signed by Md Mashiur Rahman Sohel, assistant superintendent of police (media) of the RAB-9, said this on Tuesday morning.
A joint team of the RAB-1 and- 9 conducted a drive at a house in the Uttara and arrested him on Monday night, it reads.
The former lawmaker was shown arrested in a case filed over the attack on students and people during the recent mass upsurge, with Sylhet's Kotwali police station on October 2.
Besides, police have arrested Lalmonirhat District Awami League Joint General Secretary Sakhawat Hossain aka Sumon Khan.
He was arrested from the Teesta Toll Plaza in Sadar upazila on Tuesday morning.
He has been accused in over a dozen cases on charges of murder, extortion and encroachment, according to AKM Fazlul Haque, Lalmonirhat additional superintendent of police (A Circle).
On the other hand, former Narsingdi-3 lawmaker Shirajul Islam Mollah has been arrested in Dhaka.
He was apprehended by the army outside the People's University of Bangladesh in Mohammadpur's Asad Gate area on Monday evening, said Mohammadpur Police Station chief Ali Ifthekhar Hasan.
He said, "Shirajul had gone to attend an event at the university as its chairman. The students detained him and informed the army. Upon receiving information from the army, we brought him in."
