The High Court (HC) on Sunday granted bail to former Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) mayor Selina Hayat Ivy in five separate cases, including one filed over the killing of garment worker Minarul Islam during the July-August 2024 mass uprising.
The bench of Justice ASM Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Sagir Hossain passed the order after hearing five separate bail petitions filed by Ivy in connection with the cases.
Barristers Sara Hossain, Md Motahar Hossain Sazu, and SM Hridoy Rahman appeared for Ivy, while Deputy Attorney General Sultana Akhter Rubi represented the state.
Following the order, lawyer SM Hridoy Rahman told reporters that Ivy would be released from jail if the Appellate Division does not stay the High Court's decision.
Earlier in May this year, a lower court had rejected Ivy's bail petition in the case filed over Minarul's death.
According to case documents, Minarul Islam was shot dead on July 20 last year in Narayanganj's Adamjee area, where students and workers had joined demonstrations under the banner of the anti-discrimination student movement. He was taken to the 300-bed Narayanganj Hospital in Khanpur, where doctors pronounced him dead.
On September 23, 2024, Minarul's brother, Nazmul Haque, filed a murder case with Siddhirganj Police Station, naming ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 132 others as accused, along with around 300 unidentified persons.
Selina Hayat Ivy was listed as the 12th accused in the case and was later shown arrested in several other related cases.
