Fakhrul, seven others get bail in arson case

A Dhaka court on Monday granted bail to eight top leaders of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) including its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in an arson attack case filed with Hatirjheel Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shorafuzzaman Ansari passed the order after hearing the bail petitions filed by the BNP leaders.

Seven other leaders are Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Mirza Abbas, Gayeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moin Khan, Nazrul Islam Khan, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Ruhul Kuddus Talukder Dulu.

Advocate Zainul Abedin, Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokan and Advocate Masud Ahmed Talukder stood for bail hearing in the court.

Earlier in the morning, the BNP leaders surrendered to the court seeking bail.

Barrister AKM Ahsanur Rahman, one of the lawyers for the BNP leaders said, "The court granted bail to eight BNP leaders in a case filed with Hatirjheel Police Station. Some other accused in this case will appear before the court for bail soon."

He also said, "The High Court granted bail to them in the case until submission of the charge sheet. Later, the government lodged an appeal against the High Court's order. After hearing, the Appellate Division on April 18, 2019 ordered them to surrender to the trial court within two weeks."

"The trial court on August 21 received the Appellate Division's order and the BNP leaders surrendered on Monday following the SC order," he added.

Police filed the case against 55 people on October 01, 2018.
