Fakhrul slams govt for 'fictitious' cases

Demands release of two Ctg BNP leaders

BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir alleged on Monday the government has been filing 'fictitious' cases to suppress political activists, reports UNB.

"We're now deprived of all democratic rights, and we're not allowed to hold meetings and rallies. The government is suppressing and harassing the political activists by implicating them with fictitious cases," he said.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks while attending a namaz-e-janaza of party's information and research affairs secretary Abu Syeed Khan Khokon in front of the Nayapaltan central office.

Khokon died on Sunday night while undergoing treatment at United Hospital at the age of 65.

Fakhrul prayed for salvation of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to his bereaved family members.

Later, Khokon's janaza was held with the participation of several hundreds party leaders and activists.

On behalf of the party, Fakhrul along with party standing committee members Gayeshwar Chandra Roy and Nazrul Islam Khan placed a wreath at Khokon's coffin paying last respect to him.

Meanwhile, plainclothes police arrested BNP Chattogram divisional organising secretary Mahbubur Rahman Shamim and city BNP general secretary Abul Hashem Bakkar from the city's GEC intersection on Monday.

A team of Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the duo from in front of Hotel Meridian around 1:45 pm, said city BNP assistant office secretary Idris Ali.

Mehedi Hasan, deputy commissioner (north) of DB police, Chattogram, said the BNP leaders were arrested in a case filed on charge of attacking police on the court premises on Sunday.

On Sunday, a group of BNP leaders and activists swooped on police on the court premises after a court cancelled the bail of party leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury.

Later, a case was filed with Kotwali thana against some 150 leaders and activists of BNP and its associate bodies in this connection.

Meanwhile, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir strongly protested the arrest of the two leaders.

In a statement, he said the government is arresting BNP leaders and activists one after another to implement its 'evil plans' ahead of the next general election.

Fakhrul said the government has continued arresting his party leaders and workers to eliminate the opposition parties for depoliticisation in the country.

He demanded the government immediately release Shamim and Hashem.
