BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday said the victory achieved through the July 2024 mass uprising must be strengthened collectively by everyone.
"Even if there are differences of opinion, the sacrifices made by the young boys and girls should not go in vain, and their dreams must be fulfilled," he said while presiding over a discussion at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club in Dhaka.
The programme was organised to mark the publication of books written by Prof Dr Mahbub Ullah and his late wife, Umme Salma Alo.
Mirza Fakhrul said that in his writings, Prof Mahbub Ullah always focused on the country, the people, and social change, rather than personal gain or loss.
The BNP leader described Mahbub Ullah as one of Bangladesh's finest intellectuals, who, however, did not receive the recognition he deserved.
Fakhrul also highlighted the long-standing relationship between BNP and Prof Dr Mahbub Ullah, saying it would be a denial of truth to ignore this connection.
"Whenever BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia wanted to discuss important matters, she consulted Mahbub Ullah. Many key ideas of Khaleda Zia's 'Vision 2030' also came from him. In 2018, when a political alliance was formed, Mahbub Ullah, Mahfuz Ullah, and Zafrullah Chowdhury played major roles," he added.
At the event, adviser to the interim government Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan said that the British heavily manipulated the map of the region. The 1905 partition of Bengal was later reversed under pressure.
"If it had not been reversed, the artificial state of Pakistan created in 1947 might not have been necessary, and the bloody war for independence that followed might also have been avoided," he added.
The event was conducted by Jugantor editor Abdul Hye Shikder. Former caretaker government adviser Hossain Zillur Rahman, political scientist Prof Dilara Chowdhury, Dhaka University professor Mohammad Nurul Amin Bapari, historian Prof Ahmed Kamal, writer Prof Hayat Hossain, Chittagong University professor Nilufar Sultana, Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman, and Inqilab editor AMM Bahauddin also spoke at the programme.
