Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haq Nur, the former DUCSU vice president, has demanded that the Awami League (AL) and its student and youth affiliates the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and the Jubo League be banned, reports bdnews24.com.
He also called for the killers of students and the general public engaged in peaceful protests to be identified and quickly brought to justice.
Nur went to the Secretariat in the city on Wednesday to meet Home Affairs Advisor M Sakhawat Hussain and informed him about his demand.
The Gono Parishad demanded the appointment of new chiefs of police stations and superintendents of police at every district and thana, the firing of Home Secretary Jahangir Alam, divisional DIGs and all party-affiliated officials and for them to be brought under corruption charges, and the appointment of army personnel to every police station to provide security.
They also demanded that all forms of bribery and corruption be eliminated, including for passports and immigration, and the formation of a people-friendly police system; investigation and actions against allegations and irregularities; raids to recover illegal weapons; and the restoring of jobs to those who had been unfairly dismissed.
After the meeting, Nur told the media that the home affairs advisor had spoken about getting the Awami League in order and had spoken truly about its positive role in history.
However, for the past 15 years, the Awami League has had the worst history in the world, he said.
When a traitorous, fascist prime minister attempts to stay in power by committing genocide and foreign army intervention, her party cannot be allowed to engage in Bangladesh's politics in any way, Nur said.
"Under the circumstances, the entire nation is demanding the banning of the Awami League and calling for the prime minister to be brought back to face justice. So, if the people who have come to power through the support of the people speak out against public opinion, there will be a reaction.
