Govt gives spl focus on backward regions' dev: MA Mannan

SYLHET, Mar. 31: State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan has said the Awami League government is very sincere about changing the fate of the underdeveloped regions, especially the haor and other parts of the country which have long been deprived of advancement.

"We have stressed raising the living standard of the people of the rural areas, especially those which have been a little backward mainly for geographical reasons like haor (low-lying) and others," said MA Mannan.

He was addressing a gathering at village Astma in Dakshin Sunamganj upazila after visiting a haor protection embankment project on Dekhar haor implemented by the Water Development Board (WDB) on Friday afternoon.

The state minister called upon the people for voting AL in the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad election to keep up the country's development spree. "You just see the overall development during the AL-led regime," he told the gathering.

Local eminent personality Tara Mia presided over it while Upazila Nirbahi Officer Harun Or Rashid, Upazila AL Vice-president Tohur Ali and General Secretary Ataur Rahman, Dargapasha Union Parishad chairman Md Manir Uddin, Joykolosh UP chairman Masud Mia, Zila Parishad member Jahirul Islam, WDB Sub-assistant Engineer Faruque Al Mamun and Dakshin Sunamganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ikhtiar Udin Chowdhury also addressed, among others.

The state minister later visited four other embankments constructed by WDB on the nearby Dekhar haor.

The WDB has implemented over various schemes for crop protection in the district this year at a cost of Tk1.22 billion.
