Govt itself provoking violence: Fakhrul

February 25, 2018 00:00:00

Condemning police actions on their peaceful programme, BNP alleged on Saturday that the government itself is provoking to create a violent situation in the country, reports UNB.

"The ministers of this illegal government are continuously making provocations to make a volatile situation in the country but we're very carefully avoiding it," said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

The BNP leader came up with the remarks at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office.

"We want to clearly say that we're carrying out a peaceful programme and we'll continue it in that manner," he said.

Police on Saturday foiled BNP's black-flag demonstration programme in front of its Nayapaltan central office protesting the denial of permission to hold a rally in the city.

When BNP leaders and activists tried to gather in front of their central office at 9:30 am, police chased them and arrested 20 of them.

They also damaged a makeshift stage built in front of the party office to stage their protests.

Police used water cannons, charged baton on the BNP activists to disperse them, leaving two of its leaders --Chairperson's advisor Ataur Rahman Dhali and organising secretary Fazlul Haq Milon-injured. They were rushed to hospitals.

At one stage, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, standing committee members Moudud Ahmed and Nazrul Islam Khan left the place and entered the party office.

A huge number of law enforcers were seen deployed in front of the BNP's central office.

DMP Motijheel Zone ADC Shibli Noman said, "Showing black flag occupying city roads is not a peaceful programme. They didn't take any prior permission for arranging such programme. We can't allow programmes that disrupt public life."
