Govt orders action against FF harassment in Cumilla

The government has ordered action against those involved in the harassment of freedom fighter (FF) Abdul Hai Kanu in Cumilla's Chauddagram upazila, reports bdnews24.com.

On Monday, the Chief Advisor's Press Wing issued a message condemning the attack on Kanu.

"Police and local administration have been instructed to investigate the incident and bring the culprits to justice."

On Sunday afternoon, as many as 20 local men forced 78-year-old Kanu to wear a chain of shoes around his neck after finding him alone in a village near his home. One of the men also recorded a video of the incident, which was later shared on Facebook.

The clip shows two men holding the freedom fighter's hands as around 15 others surround him while being led through the village.

At one point, Kanu removes the chain of shoes tied around his neck and begs to remain in the area, only to face continued threats from the group.

Meanwhile, a man can also be heard saying: "Can you apologise in front of an entire village?"

Moments later, Kanu is seen raising his hands in apparent surrender and apologising.

Following the incident, the freedom fighter was admitted to a hospital in nearby Feni in critical condition, according to local reports.

Locals say Kanu is a member of the central committee of the Bangladesh Krishak League. He has reportedly been unable to return to the area for eight years due to political disputes with Mujibul Haque, a former Awami League MP. Several cases have been filed against him.
