Govt reshuffles attorney general's office

The government has appointed 86 deputy attorneys general and 179 assistant attorneys general, cancelling all previous appointments in a sweeping overhaul of the state's legal team, reports bdnews24.com.

The Law and Justice Division announced the fresh appointments in separate notifications on Thursday.

The latest reshuffle follows months of changes in the state's top legal office after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on Aug 5, 2024, which triggered a wave of resignations among law officers.

The interim government appointed 66 deputy attorneys general and 161 assistant attorneys general on Aug 28, 2024, after naming a new attorney general and three additional attorneys general earlier that month.

More recently, 18 law officers-including seven deputy attorneys general and 11 assistant attorneys general-resigned on Jun 23, citing the government's failure to implement the July Charter, establish a separate secretariat for the judiciary and retain the ordinance on Supreme Court judicial appointments.

Before Thursday's overhaul, the Attorney General's Office had 93 deputy attorneys general and 213 assistant attorneys general, according to its website.

Attorney General Ruhul Quddus Kazal is a BNP National Executive Committee member and a three-time secretary of the Supreme Court Bar Association.
