February 06, 2014 00:00:00

Prime Minister (PM) Sheikh Hasina said on Wednesday the government would conduct a feasibility study on constructing a tunnel under the Jamuna river from Bahadurabad to Balasi Ghat, reports BSS.

Replying to a supplementary question from Jatiya Party member Maidul Islam during PM's question-answer session, the PM said, a study is going on to construct a rail bridge on the Jamuna river from Bahadurabad to Fulchhari Ghat.

Responding to a question from treasury bench member Faridul Huq Khan, the PM said the government is also going ahead with the project for construction of the second rail bridge on the Jamun at Bahadurabad point.

As part of the project, study is going on seven projects, she said adding a rail bridge project with an estimated cost of Tk 168 billion has been approved by the cabinet committee on economic affairs. The project would be constructed on a PPP basis, she said.

UNB adds: The PM on the day said the world community has accepted the results of the recent national election in Bangladesh.

"The world community has accepted the recent (national) election as the affirmative achievement against the terrorist acts and violence of the BNP and Jamaat-Shibir quarters to foil the election and grab state power illegally," she said, replying to a question of AKM Rahmatullah (AL-Dhaka) in Parliament during the PM's question-answer session.

She said that a good number of state and government heads greeted the newly elected government in messages sent to her.

"Besides, heads of UN and other international organisations also greeted me as the Prime Minister of the newly elected government."

She said that governments of USA, EU and other friendly nations as well as international organisations have expressed their desire to continue to work with the present government to continue the democracy, good governance and development process.

Hasina expressed the hope that the flow of greetings from different countries and organisations will continue in the coming days.

She mentioned that the international community "thinks that the advancement of the parliamentary democracy in Bangladesh" will give additional pace to development and good governance achieved in the last five years.

The PM said that the 10th parliamentary elections and the greetings of the world community and their desire to work with the present government is the "sign of the diplomatic success" of this government.

Another report adds: Accusing the BNP Chairperson Khalead Zia of unleashing violence by her 'terrorist outfits', Hasina asked the BNP chief to rein in her 'terrorist and hooligan groups'.

"You (Khaleda) must control these elements…you let loose them against Awami League leaders and workers. Each person has the right to lead a peaceful life and we will surely take action whatever necessary to protect that right," she said.

Hasina said this while talking to journalists after visiting the National Orthopedic Hospital to see the condition of Awami League (AL) and Chhatra League leaders who were critically injured in the attack by BNP and Jamaat-Shibir terrorists after and before the 10th general election held on January 5.

She also asked the BNP chief whether she is aware of the misdeeds of her party leaders and workers across the country or not.

Expressing her firm stance against terrorism, the PM said the government would take stern action against terrorism. "Shedding crocodile's tears will be of no use… I would like to tell her the efforts she is making to prove innocence of her terrorists is her mistake," she said.

Responding to the allegation of Khaleda Zia that over 29,000 party leaders and workers of BNP have been arrested till January 31, Sheikh Hasina said that all those whose names she read out at a press conference on Tuesday have been identified as terrorists.

Referring to the brutal attack on a woman union council member of Kansat (Chapainwabaganj), Hasina said the tendons of her hands and legs were severed and the terrorists stabbed in her chest at the directives of a local BNP leader.

"Those who attacked the woman brutally are not children of their mothers. How a person who grows up in his mother's womb and takes her breast-milk could attack a woman in such a brutal way?" she said angrily.

Hasina also categorically said that the government must take action against that BNP leader.
