FE REPORT | September 03, 2025 00:00:00

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said Sheikh Mujibur Rahman took away basic human rights, democracy, and freedom of expression by establishing Baksal during his rule.

He further said during the Mujib rule between 1972 and 1975, people witnessed the misrule of Awami League through arbitrary killings, lootings and destruction of democracy. for which people shed their blood.

Late president Ziaur Rahman, however, rescued the people the country from the situation by introducing multiparty democracy, he opined.

The leader made the remarks while speaking at a canal cleaning programme organised by Dhaka North City BNP in the capital's Uttara on Tuesday, marking the party's 47 founding anniversary.

"And finally, he (Mujib) banned all the political parties except his own Baksal. All the national newspapers were shut down with only a few exceptions. There was no freedom of expression, and no one could speak freely. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman deprived people of even basic human rights," he recalled.

Hasina continues to instigate violence in Bangladesh by unleashing Chhatra League and others and trying to destablise the country, and Nurul Haque Nur is the latest victim of this, he said, adding that "if anyone is further attacked in the country, we will smash the hands of Awami League."

Stating that there will be no compromise on the country's independence and sovereignty, he also said that Sheikh Hasina has fled the country and is engaging evil activities in India.

Talking about the country's politics, he added that Muhammad Yunus has no intention of entering politics and has come only to try to restore peace in the country.

And although Sheikh Hasina had everything in her hands earlier, BNP will bring a balance of power in the coming days.

Stating that BNP leaders and activists respect the law, he also said, "The law will be followed as law. If the BNP comes to power, the media will be able to operately completely independently."

Addressing the leaders and activists of Chhatra Dal, Fakhrul said, "The student union elections or any other elections cannot be disrupted."
