BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said the Awami League (AL) government has fallen due to its misrule and corruption, report agencies.

"Bangladesh became independent after the sacrifice of Abu Sayeed and others who were killed in recent quota reform movement. Their sacrifices are not to be forgotten," he told reporters after offering prayers at the grave of Abu Sayeed at Pirganj in Rangpur on Wednesday.

Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, was killed in police firing during the student's quota reform movement.

Fakhrul said, "Our responsibility is to reestablish democracy in the independent Bangladesh resisting all conspiracies. I would like to urge the countrymen to assist the interim government to create a congenial atmosphere for elections."

The BNP secretary general said trials of the murderers who killed the innocent students and people must be held on the soil of Bangladesh. Good governance will be established if murderers are brought under justice, he added.

Later, Fakhrul visited the house of Abu Sayeed and met with his parents. He handed over financial assistant to them.

Later, he addressed a meeting titled 'Sampriti Somabesh' at Darul Ulum Madrasha ground at Jafar Para there.

BNP joint secretaries Harunur Rashid and Habibun Nabi Khan and Rangpur divisional organising secretaries Principal Asadul Habib Dulu and Abdul Khalek, among others, were present.

Meanwhile, BNP Senior Joint Secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has demanded immediate action against the police personnel involved in various crimes.

"Those responsible for crimes within the police force, which was created by Sheikh Hasina, must be identified and punished immediately," he said.

Talking to reporters after visiting injured students at the Suhrawardy Hospital in the capital on Wednesday, the BNP leader also said those who from the government instigated the police force to kill the innocent people should also be brought to justice swiftly.

Pointing at the current interim administration, he said it is also the responsibility of the government to ban the use of brutal weapons like short guns by the police in suppressing the agitations and protests.

Meanwhile, the BNP filed on Wednesday two cases with Paltan Model thana accusing 30 police personnel, including former inspector general Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun and former Detective Branch chief Harunor Rashid, of looting and robbery in the name of a police raid on the BNP's central offices in the capitals' Naya Paltan in two separate incidents.
