The High Court (HC) has acquitted former BNP lawmaker Habibul Islam Habib of a case lodged over the 2002 attack on the motorcade of the then leader of the opposition Sheikh Hasina in Satkhira, reports BSS.
A HC bench of Justice Mohammad Ali and Justice Sk Tahsin Ali passed the order on Thursday, allowing a revision plea, challenging the lower court judgment that sentenced him to 10 years in jail in the case.
"The High Court did not pass any order regarding the other convicts as it only heared the revision plea filed by Habibul Islam Habib," appellant's lawyer Md Aminul Islam said.
The attack took place in Kolaroa, Satkhira on August 30, 2002. The attackers vandalised a couple of vehicles of the convoy too.
Satkhira Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on February 4, 2021, sentenced three people, including Habib, to 10 years in imprisonment, three others to nine years in imprisonment and 44 others to different jail terms with a minimum of four years in the case.
