November 06, 2025 00:00:00

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman has said his party will contest the upcoming national election independently and will not form any alliance, report agencies.

Shafiqur made the remarks while talking to journalists at Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Wednesday.

The party will ensure the elections are held in February 2026 with the participation of everyone. If elections are delayed, it can lead to various forms of unrest, he said.

Regarding the electoral alliances, he said, "We have not decided to form any alliance, and we will not form one," he said, adding that there is no scope for the Awami League in the upcoming election.

Speaking about his recent foreign visit, Rahman said he met with Bangladeshi expatriates abroad who expressed immense warmth and love.

"I am deeply moved by their affection. They have high expectations from the nation and want to contribute to its rebuilding. Yet, despite their significant contributions, we have not been able to show them proper respect," he said.

It was his first visit to Sylhet after being elected Ameer of the party for the third term.

Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami has formed a two-member committee to hold discussions with political parties aimed at developing a 'consensus framework on the proposed electoral structure, implementation of the July Charter, and a national referendum.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the party's central executive council with Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman in the chair held on Monday evening, said a press release issued on Wednesday.

Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman constituted the committee comprising the party's Nayeb-e-Ameer Dr Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher and Assistant Secretary General Dr Hamidur Rahman Azad.

Besides, Jamaat-e-Islami now wants the proposed referendum on the July National Charter 2025 to be held any day before the next generation election, said its assistant secretary general AHM Hamidur Rahman Azad on Wednesday.

"The latest stance of our eight parties is that the referendum should be held any day before the election," he said while talking to reporters after a meeting with Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin.

A two-member Jamaat delegation, led by Azad, met the CEC at the latter's Nirbachan Bhaban office at 3:30pm.
