JP's Saad Ershad wins Rangpur-3 by-election

RANGPUR, Oct 05 (BSS): Jatiya Party (JP)-nominated candidate Rahgir Almahi Saad Ershad was unofficially declared victorious in today's Rangpur-3 by-polls.

"Rahgir Almahi Saad Ershad won the Rangpur-3 by-polls bagging 58,878 votes," Regional Election Officer and Returning Officer (RO) for Rangpur-3 by-polls GM Sahatab Uddin announced the unofficial results at Police Hall control room at 7.18pm.

Awami League (AL) earlier withdrew its candidature for the polls giving support to the candidate of Jatiya Party, a major partner of the AL-led grand alliance.

The EC official said nearest rival of Saad Ershad and BNP-nominated candidate Rita Rahman secured the second position bagging 16,947 votes with her party symbol Sheaf of Paddy.

A total of six candidates contested the by-polls in Rangpur-3 seat that became vacant following death of Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangshad and Party Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad on July 14 last.

Among other contestants, independent candidate Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif got 14,984 votes with his symbol Motor Car, Gano Front candidate Muhammad Shahidullah bagged 1,662 votes with the symbol Fish, Khelafat Majlish candidate Tauhidur Rahman Mandal Raju got 924 votes with the symbol Wall Clock and National People Party candidate Shafiul Alam bagged 611 votes with the symbol Mango.

"After counting results received from all 175 polling centres from across the Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency, we are declaring the unofficial results here tonight," the RO said adding that the unofficial results will be reexamined today (Sunday).

"A total of 94,006 voters exercised their franchise in Rangpur-3 by-polls today against four lakh 41 thousand and 224 eligible voters and the voters' turnout stands at 22.86 per cent in the by-elections," he said.

"Not a single vote was cancelled as a result of using electronic voting machiness (EVMs) at all 1,023 booths in all 175 polling centres of the constituency" the returning officer added.

The RO congratulated all participating candidates and thanked people, election officials, law enforcement agencies, journalists and others concerned for extending all-out cooperation in holding the Rangpur-3 by-poll peacefully in a free- fair, transparent and credible manner.
