JU teacher Jony arrested, sent to jail

August 24, 2025 00:00:00

A Dhaka court has sent former Jahangirnagar University (JU) assistant professor Mahmudur Rahman Jony to jail in a murder case linked to last year's student-led uprising that toppled the Sheikh Hasina government, reports bdnews24.com.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Abdullah Mohammad Saleh passed the order on Saturday, denying both the bail plea and the police request to question him in custody.

The information was confirmed by Sub-Inspector (SI) Bishwajit Debnath from the Prosecution Divison.

Jony, who once served as the president of the Jahangirnagar University chapter of the Bangladesh Chhatra League, was arrested on Friday night from Bank Town in Savar municipality.

He had been an assistant professor in the Department of Public Health and Informatics and also served as an assistant proctor before being dismissed from the university.

The investigating officer, SI Mehedi Hasan of Savar Police Station, produced Jony before the court with a seven-day remand prayer.

Appearing for the defence, lawyer Tanmoy Bhowmik opposed the plea and sought bail instead.

"The accused is a university teacher and not involved in the incident," the lawyer told the court. "He left politics and has been arrested merely as a suspect.

"The remand lacks justification. We request the court to reject it and grant him bail."

The case stems from the events of August 5 last year, the day the Awami League government was ousted.

According to the case details, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD)leader Arifur Rahman, also known as Russell, joined a protest that afternoon at Muktir Mor in Savar. He was reportedly shot around 4:30pm by assailants and declared dead at the hospital.
