Meeting Oikya Front's 7-point demand not possible: Quader

October 29, 2018 00:00:00

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader on Sunday dismissed meeting the seven-point demand of Dr Kamal Hossain-led Jatiya Oikya Front, saying to meet the seven-point demand, change has to be brought in the constitution, report agencies.

"The Oikya Front is complaining. It is typical for the opposition to be a bit critical. After all, the purpose of the opposition is to criticise. They have made a list of seven demands. Even if we wanted to meet these demands we would have to change the constitution. It is impossible," said Obaidul Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister.

"If they strike over the issue, if they are not prepared to be flexible, it could cause some unrest," hE added.

The Jatiya Oikya Front has called for the reformation of the Election Commission, the dissolution of parliament, the freeing of jailed BNP leader Khaleda Zia and for elections to be held under an 'impartial' government.

Oikya Front leader Kamal Hossain has threatened to bring the government to justice if it does not meet these demands.

The minister also ruled out the possibility of bringing any change to the Road Transport Act right at the moment.

"We can't change the Road Transport Act now. If there is any logical demand, we'll consider it after discussion and they have to wait until the next parliament session," said Quader.

The minister came up with the remarks while talking to reporters at the Shetu Bhaban.

Earlier, transport workers went on a 48-hour work abstention from 6 am on Sunday to press home their eight-point demand.
