At the University of Dhaka, a group of students burnt an effigy of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and threw shoes at a photograph of Ghulam Azam in separate programmes on Tuesday.
Under the banner of an anti-hegemony platform, a group of students burnt the effigy of Narendra Modi at around 4:45 pm in front of the DUCSU building for describing Bangladesh's Victory Day as India's Victory Day.
They said Bangladesh's Victory Day was achieved through the blood and sacrifice of millions of people.
One of the organisers, Riyad Jubah, said, "Ignoring public opinion, Sheikh Hasina brought this brute into the country, someone who persecutes minorities in India. At that time, the people of Bangladesh spontaneously protested against it.
"Because of this resistance, this proxy of India carried out killings and repression against the people of this country. The misrule that has continued in Bangladesh for the last 17 years has been backed by India. Therefore, our protest is against Indian hegemony in Bangladesh."
The protesters also placed a sticker of Narendra Modi near Madhur Canteen and trampled on it as part of the demonstration.
Earlier in the day at around 1:30 pm, a group of students at the University of Dhaka expressed their hatred by throwing shoes at a photograph of Ghulam Azam, who was convicted of crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
Ahsan Ullah, a demonstrator, said that Ghulam Azam and leaders like Nizami had opposed the historic Liberation War of 1971. He alleged that their ideological successors are still spreading propaganda by describing the Liberation War as an "Indian conspiracy."
"We organised this programme on Victory Day as an expression of hatred and protest against the razakars," he said.
