Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) has alleged that a group of students, envious of its growing popularity, is attempting to foil the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) election by inciting mob violence and obstructing its candidates from collecting nomination forms.
The organisation also expressed concern that the university administration has so far failed to ensure a level playing field for all participants.
The allegations were raised at a press conference held at Madhur Canteen on Monday (18 August) evening by DU JCD General Secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon.
He claimed that JCD candidates for the Bangamata Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall union election faced obstacles while trying to collect their nomination papers, prompting the party to call the briefing.
Shipon stated that when the incident was reported, the JCD immediately informed the Chief Returning Officer of DUCSU and the hall provost.
However, the authorities were unable to control the situation, forcing JCD candidates to leave the hall without collecting their nomination forms.
The JCD general secretary also said the administration had repeatedly been urged to maintain law and order and prevent mob interference to ensure a free, fair, and festive election.
"Without these measures, the DUCSU election cannot be free or participatory," he said, adding that the university authorities have not yet guaranteed a perfect level playing field.
He also said that since 5 August, JCD has become more popular in universities, which made some rival groups jealous.
