A Dhaka Court on Tuesday placed senior journalists Mozammel Babu and Shyamal Dutta as well as former president of the Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee, Shahriar Kabir, on a seven-day remand in two murder cases.

Judge of the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka, Md Sanaullah, passed the orders after hearing two separate petitions, filed by the police seeking their remand. Earlier on the day, the police produced them in the court with 10-day remand prayers for each of them.

Shyamal was placed on remand in a case filed over the death of 31-year-old Mohammad Fazlur in Dhaka's Bhasantek area during the mass uprising.

On September 11, Mohammad Sabuj, 42, elder brother of the victim, filed the case with Bhasantek Police Station against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, 25 journalists and 139 others.

According to the case statements, Fazlur was shot at around 7:00 pm on August 5 when he was at a rally - held to celebrate the fall of the Hasina government - in front of Diganta Filling Station in Bhashantek.

Babu, managing director and editor-in-chief of Ekattor TV, and Shahriar Kabir were put on remand in a murder case - filed with Ramna Model Police Station over the death of domestic help Liza Akter, 19.

During the Anti-Discrimination Students' Movement, Liza was shot from a helicopter on July 18 while she was on the 14th floor of a building in the capital's Ramna area, and died at a hospital on July 22.

Liza's father Zainal Shikder filed the case with the Ramna Police Station on September 5 against 174 people, including Sheikh Hasina. Babu and Shahriar were shown arrested in the case later.

Shyamal and Babu were arrested from Mymensingh on September 16, while Shahriar Kabir was arrested from his residence at Banani.

Meanwhile, another Dhaka Court stayed its remand order for former railways minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan in a case filed over the death of a student, Imran Hossain, in Dhaka's Jatrabari area on August 5.

The stay order came after the court placed the former minister on a three-day remand in the murder case. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Shahin Reza passed the order when Nurul Islam's lawyer told the court that the accused had secured the High Court bail in the case and submitted the relevant documents. Then the court stayed its previous order.

The accused was then shown arrest in another murder case, filed with Jatrabari Police Station. However, details of the case could not be known immediately.

Imran's mother Kohinur Akhter on September 1 filed the case against Sheikh Hasina, Nurul Islam, and 295 others with Jatrabari Police Station. Sub-Inspector Md Asaduzzaman, General Register Officer of Jatrabari Police Station, confirmed the court orders.
