Nation celebrates Bangabandhu's 99th birth anniversary

BD mission in Tokyo also marks the festival

The 99th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was celebrated across the country on Sunday in a befitting manner, reports BSS.

The day was celebrated as the National Children's Day. It was also a public holiday.

On this day in 1920, the nation's architect was born in Tungipara of Gopalganj.

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their homage to Bangabandhu by placing wreaths at his mazar (mausoleum) in Tungipara.

President Abdul Hamid first laid a wreath at the mazar of Bangabandhu followed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

After placing the wreaths, they stood in solemn silence for some time as a mark of profound respect to the memory of the Father of the Nation as the bugle played the last post.

A smartly turned out contingent drawn from the Bangladesh Army, Navy and Air Force gave a guard of honour on the occasion.

Abdul Hamid and Sheikh Hasina offered fateha and joined a munajat seeking eternal peace of the departed soul of Bangabandhu as well as other martyrs of the August 15 carnage.

Later, the President signed the visitor's book kept on the mazar premises.

Flanked by senior leaders of the party, Sheikh Hasina, also the Awami League president, placed another wreath at the mazar of Bangabandhu on behalf of AL.

Search engine giant Google created a Doodle to celebrate the National Children's Day and the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Through his dynamic leadership, Bangabandhu had organised the Bangalee nation to fight against exploitation and repression by the Pakistani rulers.

The movement culminated in independent Bangladesh through the nine-month Liberation War in 1971.

On August 15, 1975, the great leader along with most of his family members was assassinated by a disgruntled group of army men.

Different sociopolitical organisations, including Awami League and its associated bodies, observed the day amid various programmes.

A Qurankhani and a milad mahfil were held at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

The ruling party will organise a discussion at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre at 3pm today where Prime Minister and AL President Sheikh Hasina will speak.

Besides, the Embassy of Bangladesh in Tokyo also celebrated the 99th birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and National Children's Day 2019 amid festivity.

The programme was participated by a large number of children, parents and representatives of Bangladesh community in Japan along with the mission's officials.

The programme of the day included placing wreaths at the portrait of the Father of the Nation; reading out the messages issued by the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs; quiz competition on Bangabandhu and Bangladesh; dress-as-you-like competition on Bangabandhu, Bangladesh and Liberation War and other contests participated by the children.

At the beginning of the programme, Ambassador Rabab Fatima together with the children paid tributes to the Father of Nation by placing a wreath at the portrait of Bangabandhu.

This was followed by a special prayer seeking Jannah for Bangabandhu and his family members.

The ambassador shed light on the life and achievement of Bangabandhu and explained how the birth of Bangladesh is intertwined with the birth of Bangabandhu, said a press release.

Expatriate Bangladesh community members also took part in the discussion to pay their homage to the Father of the National and to gratefully recall the visionary leadership of Bangabandhu who led the entire nation to the Liberation War and created an independent Bangladesh.

Crests were distributed amongst the winners in different competitions. Chocolates, books and graphic novel 'Mujib' were also distributed among the children.

A group of children from 'Sharawlipi Cultural Academy', who learn Bangla culture and language, led the audience to sing the national anthem of Bangladesh.

After that, they performed different colorful cultural programmes. Finally, all the children participated with the ambassador in cutting the cake to celebrate the birthday of Bangabandhu and to say 'Happy Birthday Father of the Nation'.
