NBR chairman urges all to shun tax-dodging tendency

October 09, 2019 00:00:00

Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) Mosharraf Hossain Bhuiyan urged on Monday all to shun the tax-evading tendency for continuation of the country's development, reports UNB.

"You all have to support the government so that the development trend continues. So, you all should shun the tax-dodging tendency," he said while addressing a discussion organised by Quantum Foundation in the city.

Mosharraf said the national income saw a four-time rise from 2006 to 2018. "Our per capita income was $200 in 1975 but now it stands at $1915. The country's GDP growth is highest among the Asian countries," he said.

Mentioning that the country is developing and the government has taken many projects, the NBR chief said, "So, we need huge money. How will we carry out development activities if the government has no money? So, you all have to help the government. If we can continue our GDP growth at 8 per cent over the next 10 years, we can go a far way."

He regretted that many people live in flat spending Tk 70,000-Tk 80,000 per month as rent but they are not interested to pay tax. "If we don't strengthen the government, how will it give you various facilities?"

Mosharraf said there will be no beggar in the country in future. "Even there'll be no tendency of going abroad."

He said there are around 1.0-1.5 million Indians, 0.5 million Sri Lankans and many from other countries are working in Bangladesh. "They're taking huge currencies from Bangladesh. Investors want to appoint foreigners with high salaries than Bangladeshi due to corruption."
