People can speak freely now, says Rizvi

FE REPORT | September 27, 2024 00:00:00

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir said the people of the country can now speak freely, which was impossible during the fallen autocrat Sheikh Hasina's regime.

The immediate-past Awami League (AL) government created a terrifying atmosphere to prevent the opponents from delivering any speech against it, he added.

"Now if anyone says anything (against the interim government), s/he has no chance to land in 'ayna ghar' (torture cell). BNP has fought (for it) and thus people have got the scope to speak freely."

He said these at an event on Thursday, organised by 'Amra BNP Paribar' for providing financial support to the family members of two martyrs of the anti-Hasina movement upon the directives of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. Saikat Chandra Dey and Parvez were killed by police bullets at Matuail in the capital.

Rizvi alleged that the AL government used forces of a different country to brutally suppress the July-August uprising.

"The ousted fascist Sheikh Hasina had turned the whole country into a family property. None could speak anything against her and her family members."

"If anyone spoke against Sheikh Hasina and her father's misrule, the AL government picked him up and he didn't return home."

About power outage, the BNP leader said the AL government set up the Rampal Power Plant by using sub-standard equipments just to appease India.

The AL men plundered public money in the name of setting up power plants without ensuring their energy supply source. The then government paid rents for the plants without any power generation.

"Sheikh Hasina and her collaborators siphoned off billions of taka abroad by looting public money."

"Hasina couldn't tolerate any movement against her as well as talks on democracy and rule of law. For that, she killed children, students and general people during the revolution."

Rizvi added that many BNP leaders and activists were killed and became victims of enforced disappearance.

Meanwhile, BNP Chairperson's Adviser Zainul Abdin Faroque said the ghosts of the fallen AL are hatching conspiracy against the interim government and its Chief Adviser (CA) Dr Muhammad Yunus. But, AL will never return to Bangladesh due to the misdeeds they committed while in power.
