CHATTOGRAM, Aug 11: Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Alhaj M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and councillors of 41 wards in the port city have allegedly fled after the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5.
The city people are suffering much as they are not getting any services from the offices of the CCC and ward councillors.
Sources said most of the ward offices in the city are still locked and vandalised.
Ward councillors, secretaries and workers are not coming to the offices. So, the city dwellers are going back without getting their services.
They are suffering much without getting necessary certificates. However, even though ward secretaries and workers have come to some ward offices, the city dwellers are still not getting services.
All necessary certificates, including birth certificate, nationality certificate, character certificate, inheritance certificate and succession certificate, are issued from the ward councilor office of the city corporation.
These certificates require the signature of ward councillors. But now it cannot be issued as the ward councillors fled away after August 5.
Sources said Sheikh Hasina's government resigned in the face of the student movement on August 5. Awami League president Sheikh Hasina left the country that day.
Then office of CCC and wards were attacked. Besides, the houses of CCC Mayor Alhaj Rezaul Karim and some ward councillors were attacked and vandalised.
The mayor and ward councillors are not working since then. It is reported that CCC Mayor Alhaj M Rezaul Karim Chowdhury and ward councillors of 41 wards of the port city reportedly fled away at that time.
Chief Executive Officer Sheikh Muhammad Tauhidul Islam said, "Most of the ward councillor offices have been vandalised. Some of them are not ready to open just now, so people are not getting services. The interim government has just taken over. If we receive instructions, we will act accordingly."
