BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir blasted on Thursday Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for making 'false' comments in parliament about his party chairperson's assets abroad, saying the premier's speech was only to mislead people, report agencies.
He also said such an act is 'tantamount to treason.'
"There's no existence of the assets the Prime Minister talked about yesterday (Wednesday) in parliament. She tried to confuse people with her falsehood. Her effort to confuse people with false statement in parliament is some sort of treason," he said.
The BNP leader came up with the remarks while speaking at a press conference in the city.
He further said, "We strongly condemn and protest the unguarded, imprudent, indecent and aggressive comments of the Prime Minister."
Earlier on Wednesday, the Prime Minister told parliament that international media ran news that Khaleda Zia is the third most corrupt person in the world.
She said huge money stashed by Khaleda Zia's two sons was detected in many countries, including US$ 750 million in Belgium, US$ 250 million in Malaysia, a house worth several million in Dubai, and assets, including a market in Saudi Arab, which are now under investigation.
Protesting Hasina's comments, Fakhrul said the Prime Minister took oath to work as responsible person and speak the truth and not to tell a lie. "So, she can't make false statement and confuse people standing in parliament."
He urged the Prime Minister to stop lying as she will not be able to mislead people with her false comments.
The BNP leader also warned that a defamatory suit can be filed against the Prime Minister for her calling his chairperson a mad person.
"The ruling party leaders are suffering from mental problem only because of fear of Khaleda Zia and her popularity. We usually don't make such comments. But, a defamatory case can be filed against the Prime Minister for the word (insane) she uttered about our chairperson," he observed.
Fakhrul said the PM's comments about Khaleda and her family members will create confusion in public mind about the next general election and a congenial political atmosphere.
Mentioning that the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court branded Sheikh Hasina as a 'wrongheaded' person in the past, he said the Prime Minister should think what is people's and the court's perception about her before she calls any one 'insane'.
Fakhrul said the Prime Minister told parliament that Khaleda did not protest the allegations of having assets abroad. "It's totally falsehood. We'd protested the allegation at a press conference. Not only that we'd have sent a legal notice to her and she still did not respond to it."
He said the Prime Minister proved her allegations against the BNP chief are false and fabricated by refraining from responding to the legal notice.
