Detective Branch (DB) Police of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has arrested an UP chairman on charges of fraud.
The arrestee is Jakir Hossain (43), union parishad chairman of Maenkarchar under Meghna upazila of Cumilla district.
Jakir was arrested from Meghna upazila on Wednesday night.
Two microbuses were also seized from his possession during the arrest.
Jakir used to take money from people with a promise to provide them with cars at low prices.
Chief of DB of DMP Harun-or-Rashid disclosed this at a press briefing at its Mintoo Road office in the city on Friday.
He said Jakir first started his career as a driver of a rent-a-car service. Later, he started his own rent-a-car business.
Jakir became a billionaire in 10 years by cheating people with a false promise to provide them with cars at lower prices. He also tricked them into investing in rent-a-car business with a lure of hefty profits.
Jakir also got nomination for contesting the union parishad election with the ruling party’s electoral symbol by providing 'Prado' car to an influential person, the DB official maintained.
He said many people, including retired government officials, have lost their money due to his false promises.
Jakir, however, used to pay back the money he took from influential people, but general people are yet to get back their money from him (Jakir), said the DB official.
Jakir set traps in the name of rent-a-car business to earn billions through deception.
Over 200 people have lodged complaints against Jakir to the DB police.
During investigations, the DB police found that Jakir took a huge amount of money from 150 people from a single village of Munshiganj district.
Jakir confessed to committing fraud and said he owns flats and plots and also built an eye-catching house at his own village home, according to the DB official.
