Police aviation wing not now, may be in future: Salahuddin

FE REPORT

Home Affairs Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said forming a separate aviation wing for the Bangladesh Police is not necessary right now. Rather, priority should be given for improving the force's existing capacity and maintenance systems.

"At this moment it wouldn't be prudent to establish a separate aviation police or aviation wing for the Bangladesh Police. Improvement of their (police) existing capacity and maintenance system should get the priority first."

The minister added that forming an aviation unit for the police may be considered in the future, once the force achieves a satisfactory level of capability and efficiency.

He made the remarks while addressing a conference of senior police officials, organised as a part of the Police Week 2026 in the capital on Monday.

Although two helicopters had been purchased from Russia for the police during the previous government's tenure, they have not yet arrived in the country due to international sanctions and complications in financial transactions.

"Necessary clearance from the country concerned has been obtained, and the helicopters may be delivered soon. But, can the police maintain Mi-17 helicopters at present?"

The minister also said there are plans to carry out maintenance activities with assistance from the Bangladesh Army once the helicopters are delivered. "If necessary, helicopters of suitable size may be exchanged through coordination among different divisions."

Mr Salahuddin Ahmed further said although the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) currently has a helicopter, it is not being properly maintained. Besides, of the two helicopters, operated by the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), one frequently remains under maintenance, while the other is currently out of service."Considering the situation we need to strengthen the existing capabilities of police before forming a separate aviation unit. If any agency wants helicopters merely for prestige, that is a different matter. But, enhancing real operational capability is more important," he added.
