Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said on Sunday that Awami League (AL) could not come back to the country's politics as the party has become politically bankrupt.
"Awami League's (AL) plan to come back to the politics leaning with the support from Donald Trump and playing religion card are not possible as the they (AL) have become politically bankrupt," he told the media after meeting with Singapore Non-Resident High Commissioner to Bangladesh Derek Loh Eu-Tse and Charge d' Affairs at the Singapore High Commission in Dhaka Mitchel Lee at the BNP chairperson's political office at Gulshan in the capital.
"Why should Awami League think to come back to the politics leaning on Donald Trump and on the narrative of Hindu oppression? Why have they reached such level as a political force? We have also said that they have become politically bankrupt and are now trying to come back in different forms," he said.
"If she (Sheikh Hasina) wants to prove her existence in politics, she has to return to the country. But she doesn't have that guts and public support," he maintained.
"We have discussed bilateral issues of the two friendly countries. They (Singapore) believe that it is easy to attract foreign investment and economic activities if there is an elected government," he said.
Mr Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury further said that they have also discussed sending skilled manpower to Singapore from Bangladesh, particularly skilled nurses.
About the necessity of an elected government in the country, he said, "Singapore believes that it is not possible to maintain economic activities properly without an elected government. Not only Singapore but also all diplomats (stationed in Bangladesh) also believe that it is not possible to run economic activities properly without an elected government."
Asked about the Awami League's planned gathering at Zero Point, Gulistan marking Noor Hossain Day on November 10 (which didn't take place), he replied, "When people expelled you (Sheikh Hasina) from the country then you are trying to get coverage on different times and in different forms."
"You (Sheikh Hasina) sometimes tried to play Hindu-Muslim cards and are now trying with Trump. They (AL) are now trying to come back to the politics in different shape. It reflects their political bankruptcy. It proves that they are destroyed politically," he continued.
Member of BNP chairperson's advisory council and also member of the party's international affairs committee Dr Enamul Haque Chowdhury and another member of the committee Shama Obaed were present at the meeting.
