Nagorik Oikyo President Mahmudur Rahman Manna has said if elections are held under Proportional Representation (PR) system, there is a possibility that the fallen Awami League (AL) could return to power, reports BSS.
"Elections under PR system are not realistic in the current context. If elections are held under PR system, there is a possibility that the fallen Awami League could return under the banner of Jatiya Party," he said.
Manna was addressing a shadow parliament on 'Impact of Student Union Elections on Upcoming National Elections," organised by Debate for Democracy at the Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) in the capital on Saturday.
He said in the current context, the Jatiya Party is not the tail rather the head of AL's policy.
Manna said although there are concerns regarding the February elections, these issues will be addressed and the elections will be held on schedule.
He said some impact of the student union elections will be on the national elections but it will not change the results of the national elections.
About the July Charter, he said a 'silver line' of consensus has been drawn over the July Charter. And hopefully, it will be implemented.
Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron presided over the debate programe.
Debaters' team of State University of Bangladesh became winner defeating the team of Daffodil International University in the competition.
Judges of the competition were Professor Abu Muhammad Royis, Dr. Tajul Islam Chowdhury Tuhin, and journalists Sayeedur Rahman, Maidur Rahman Rubel, and Zakir Hossain Liton.
