Reach consensus within next 10 days, as time is short: Prof Riaz

FE REPORT | July 22, 2025 00:00:00

National Consensus Commission Vice-Chairman Prof Ali Riaz on Monday urged the political parties to take decisions as soon as possible as time is running out to sign a national charter on reforms.

There are only 10 days left to reach a consensus on the reform issues by July, he said, adding, "If there is no consensus on some issues, we cannot move forward. There is no room for long discussions. A decision must be taken quickly to prepare the July Charter."

Prof Riaz made the remarks in his opening speech on the 16th day of the second phase of the National Consensus Commission's discussions with political parties at the Foreign Service Academy.

The agenda included in the Monday's discussion were the provision of the Prime Minister holding multiple positions and the principles of running the state.

He also said if anyone has any disagreement, they should inform them about it. That should also be mentioned in the charter.

Prof Riaz commented that "nothing was being forced on political parties," adding that they were not imposing anything by force, and would never want to. "But we have presented the issues that we considered important for reforming the state structure. Keeping them in mind, we hope to reach a place in the next 10 days and prepare a national charter," he continued.

Meanwhile, the second half of the day's discussion was suspended over the Uttara plane crash.

Political leaders and members present at the commission's meeting participated in a special prayer. Later, in the wake of this tragic accident, the commission session was adjourned for the rest of the day out of respect for those killed and injured.

Representatives of 30 political parties, including Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) along with others participated in the discussion.
