BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has urged the government to postpone the ongoing HSC and equivalent examinations in view of the worsening flood situation across the country, reports UNB.
He made the call while speaking to journalists during a visit to flood-affected areas in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram on Tuesday.
"Would it have caused any harm if the HSC examinations had been postponed for a few days? Students are risking their lives by wading through floodwaters to reach schools and colleges for their examinations. The Education Minister should take this situation seriously. It is an extremely difficult time," Rizvi said.
He said it was deeply distressing that children and teenage students could be prevented from reaching examination centres because of the floods or even lose their lives while trying to attend the examinations.
"I stand with the expectations of the people and urge the authorities to postpone the examinations for a few days. Once the floodwaters recede, the examinations can be held," he said.
During the visit, Rizvi also called on everyone to stand beside those affected by floods and landslides.
He stressed that relief assistance must reach all affected people to ensure that no one goes hungry.
"Livestock have also been washed away. According to a preliminary estimate, the losses amount to around Tk 30 crore, although the actual figure may be even higher," he said.
Referring to the government's response, Rizvi said it was monitoring the situation continuously.
"The Prime Minister has already held virtual meetings with local administrations and civil surgeons. He has been briefed on the local situation and the flood conditions and has issued the necessary instructions," he added.
