Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad, the eldest son of late Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman HM Ershad, on Tuesday bought the party nomination form to contest the Rangpur-3 by-polls that fell vacant following his father's death, report agencies.

Saad, flanked by some party senior leaders, collected the nomination form from JP chairman's Banani office.

Earlier, JP presidium member Fakhar-uz-Zaman Jahangir, its joint general secretary and Rangpur city unit general secretary SM Yasir, executive committee member and Ershad's niece Mehejebunnesa Rahman Tumpa collected the party nomination form to contest the by-polls.

JP sources said though Saad was not active in politics when his father was alive, he is now joining its many events as his mother and party senior cochairman Raushon Ershad is interested in making him the candidate for the by-polls as his father's heir.

SM Yasir collected party nomination paper taking Ershad's another son Eric Ershad with him, sparking criticism by a section of party leaders.

The party's nomination seekers will have to submit their nomination forms by 5:00 pm on Thursday next.

Talking to reporters after collecting the nomination form, Saad said he wants to accomplish the unending tasks of his father being elected MP from the Rangpur-3 seat.

"I'll be there in the election race if our party nominates me as its candidate. But I won't join the by-polls as an independent candidate," he said.

Saad hoped that his party will pick him as the candidate for the by-polls. "I'm also confident that I'll come out successful if I get the nomination as people of Rangpur will vote me. I'll implement the unpunished tasks of my father if I get elected."
