The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) president blamed the government for the casualties that happened during the recent quota movement, while its secretary blamed the 'anti-liberation forces' for the situation.
The two leaders expressed these dissenting opinions in two separate press conferences, held at the SCBA auditorium in the capital on Thursday.
SCBA President Barrister A M Mahbub Uddin Khokan said taking slow steps by the government regarding the quota case was responsible for the casualties. So the government is fully responsible for it.
"Hundreds of protesters may not have been killed and injured as well as public and private resources may not have been wasted, if the state authority could have taken initiatives 15 days earlier for filing a petition with the SC Chamber Judge against the HC verdict and for advance hearing of the appeal."
He urged the government to arrest the law-enforcers, who were involved in the 'killings of hundreds of protesters', and bring them under trial. He also requested the media to depict the real picture of the movement.
The SCBA president further urged the government to withdraw the curfew, to open the social media, and to secure people's fundamental rights.
Meanwhile, SCBA Secretary Senior Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque said, "The Supreme Court Bar Association strongly condemns the nefarious plot for ousting a democratic government through conspiracy, destruction and carnage."
"The attorney general, on behalf of the government, and we took initiatives for early hearing of the case concerned when the anti-quota movement started. The problem that was prevailing centring on the quota system got a solution through a prudent verdict."
However, the anti-liberation forces tried to destroy the (output of the) development activities, done by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Earlier, they used to cause random casualties, now they have resorted to killing missions. The more killings can be done, the sooner the government can be ousted. This time they set fire to the metro-rail, data centre, Setu Bhaban, BTV, etc, he noted.
"The devastation they have wreaked is incomparable. The anti-liberation forces have committed these heinous incidents to disrupt the progress towards the Smart Bangladesh."
He claimed that the rule of law exists in Bangladesh, and the law-enforcers are arresting the accused persons by maintaining the legal bindings.
