Election Commissioner Md Shah Nawaz Tuesday said the Election Commission (EC) is most likely to announce the schedule for the second phase of upazila election tomorrow (Thursday), reports UNB.

"The schedule for the second phase of upazila election is most likely to be announced on Thursday," he told reporters at his EC Secretariat office.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Rakibuddin Ahmad will announce the schedule after the commission's meeting with law-enforcement agencies, Shah Nawaz added.

The polling stations that were used in the recently held 10th parliamentary elections will also be used during the upazila elections, he said.

The second phase upazila elections are likely to be held in mid-March, while the third phase at the end of March, EC secretariat sources said.

The meeting with top brasses of law-enforcement agencies is likely to be held on Thursday as well.

Polls schedule for more than 200 upazilas will be declared in the second phase, the sources said.

Earlier, on Sunday, the CEC declared the polls schedules for 102 upazila across the country fixing balloting for February 19.

The last countrywide elections to 480 upazilas were held on January 22, 2009.

Out of the country's 487 upazilas, 475 will complete their tenures between February and June this year, while the five more by September next.

However, the tenure of Tarakanda Upazila in Mymensingh will expire at the end of 2018. The remaining six upazilas are either newly formed ones or got stuck in legal labyrinth.

The commission has a legal obligation to complete the elections to the local government units within 180 days before the expiry of their five-year tenures.

The five-year tenures of the upazilas started with the first sitting of the incumbent elected representatives after the elections.
