Shaukat Mahmood on five-day remand

A Dhaka Court on Thursday placed Shaukat Mahmood, senior journalist and former president of Jatiya Press Club, on five-day remand in a case filed with Ramna Model Police Station in Dhaka under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Judge of the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka, Fahmida Khandaker Anna, passed the order after hearing a petition filed by the investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Dhaka Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi.

The court at the same time rejected a bail petition submitted by Shaukat Mahmood.

Earlier on December 8, Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana set December 11 for hearing the remand petition submitted by the IO of the case, Md Akhtar Morshed, who is an inspector of DB Ramna Zone.

A team of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police detained Shaukat Mahmood from Dhaka's Malibagh area on December 7.

Later, he was shown arrested in a case filed against Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a US citizen of Bangladeshi origin, with Ramna Model Police Station under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

Enayet was arrested on September 13 under Section 54 of the Code of Criminal Procedure from Dhaka's Minto Road.

Onthe same day, Sub-Inspector Azizul Hakim of Ramna Model Police Station filed the case against the 55-year-old Enayet.
