Different organisations paid homage to Sher-e-Bangla AK Fazlul Huq, chief minister of undivided Bengal, on the occasion of his 57th death anniversary by placing wreaths at his grave in the city on Saturday — Focus Bangla The 57th death anniversary of Sher-e-Bangla Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq was observed across the country yesterday (Saturday) in a befitting manner, reports BSS.
Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq, popularly known as Sher-e-Bangla or Huq Saheb, was born on October 26, 1873, at his maternal uncle's house at Saturia, a prosperous village in the southern part of the district of Bakerganj. But his ancestral house was at Chakhar, a village 14 miles away from Barisal town.
Huq was an eminent public leader who had held many high political posts including the Mayor of Calcutta (1935), Chief Minister of undivided Bengal (1937-1943) and East Bengal (1954), Home Minister of Pakistan (1955) and Governor of East Pakistan (1956-58).
Bangladesh Awami League (AL) and its associate organisations paid tributes to Sher-e-Bangla by placing wreaths at his grave at 7.30 am at Tin Netar Mazar near Dhaka University's Doel Chattar area. Fatiha and special doa were also offered.
Presidium member of AL and agriculture minister Dr Abdur Razzak, AL's acting general secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif, MP, and organising secretary Abu Sayeed Al Mahmud Swapon, MP, were present at the programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Mahbubul Alam Hanif said Jamaat Islami has no right to do politics in this country even though they do so by changing party name.
