A court has sentenced six men to life in prison for the killing of Jubo Dal leader Masud Rana in Narail five years ago, reports bdnews24.com.
Judge Md Rafiqul Islam of Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict on Monday.
The convicts are Kajal Molla, Shetu Molla, Sirajul Islam alias Shipul Molla, Litu Molla, Linku Sheikh and Tapu Khan alias Hasib Molla.
In addition to life imprisonment, each of them was fined Tk 50,000, with an additional six months in prison for default of payment.
Seven others -- Taiyebur Gazi, Humayun Molla, Limon Molla, Hridoy Khan, Tony Molla, Shohag Molla and Hasmat Molla -- were sentenced to 10 years in prison, along with a fine of Tk 5,000 each and one month in prison if they fail to pay. Four more suspects -- Nazrul Molla, Robi Molla, Abuzar Molla and Samrat Molla -- received one-year jail terms, a Tk 200 fine, with an additional seven days in jail for default.
Out of 36 accused in the case, 19 were acquitted after the tribunal found insufficient evidence to convict them, said Public Prosecutor Abdur Rashid Molla.
Masud Rana, the office secretary of the Kalia Upazila Jubo Dal in Narail, was shot dead on the morning of Aug 5, 2020.
According to the case dossier, Kajal and his associates from Dewadanga village in Purulia Union opened fire during a dispute over local dominance and the illegal extraction of sand from the Nabaganga River. Several others were injured in the attack.
The following day, Rana's younger brother, Mamun Sheikh, filed a case against 36 people at Kalia Police Station.
After an investigation, SI Milton Kumar Devdas of Narail district detective police submitted charges against 38 people.
