Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury urged on Wednesday the members of the parliament (MPs) to play a strong role in ensuring welfare of the people, reports BSS.
"Development will become fruitful if people's welfare is ensured…the parliament members can play a vital role in ensuring greater welfare of the people," said the Speaker.
Dr Shirin made the remarks while addressing as the chief guest a programme on 'Consultation Meeting on the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, Accelerating the Promise', jointly organised by the Parliament Secretariat and UNFPA.

She said parliament members under the banner of 'Bangladesh Association of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (BAPPD)' are playing a leading role in preventing child marriage, reducing maternal mortality and youth development.
Dr Shirin noted that the example of Bangladesh's success in the health sector is appreciated universally.
Terming the women as 'ambassadors of development', Dr Shirin called upon the members of the parliament to give special importance towards women development.
It was stated in the programme that the 25th anniversary of the ICPD will be held in Nairobi next November.
