Strikers stage hunger march for DUCSU reelections

DU Correspondent | March 16, 2019 00:00:00

The Dhaka University (DU) students who observed a hunger strike on the campus brought out a hunger march on Friday afternoon to press home their demand for reelections and resignation of all officials involved in DUCSU elections.

The procession started from in front of Raju sculpture adjacent to Teacher-Student Center (TSC) and after parading different thoroughfares, it terminated at the same place.

During this time, general students also joined the procession.

At first, four students - Tauhid Tanjim, Shoaib Mahmud, Aninda Mondal and Mainuddin- started the hunger strike on March 12 (Tuesday) with two-point demand- re-elections to DUCSU and resignation of all officials involved in the March 11 elections.

Later, four more students joined them in the agitation.

Meanwhile, three of the eight students on strike have been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital after they fell sick.

Tawheed Tanjim said there took place huge irregularities and vote rigging in the elections; non-resident students could not cast their votes 'in the face of intimidation' by BCL activists.

He added they will continue their agitation until a fresh reschedule for DUCSU polls is announced.

Even no one has met them from the authorities regarding the issue, he regretted.

On the other hand, Ruqayyah Hall students postponed their hunger strike for 24 hours at 10:30pm on Thursday when two of the strikers after falling sick were admitted to DMCH.

Sheikh Moushumi, who was a candidate in the polls from Ruqayyah Hall, called for postponement of the strike on behalf of the hall students.

She, however, said that they would resume the strike unless the authorities meet their demands for re-elections to their hall union and resignation of the provost, Prof Dr Zeenat Huda.

Earlier, on Thursday, at 9:00pm, Proctor Golam Rabbani, Provost Zeeenat Huda, and newly-elected VP Nurul HaqueNur, GS Golam Rabbani and AGS Saddam Hossain approached the striking students requesting them to break the fast.

DU Vice Chancellor (VC) Prof Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman refused to give his comment about the students observing hunger strike for fresh elections to DUCSU.

He only said DUCSU elections took place in a fair and festive manner and he welcomed the newly-elected representatives.

DUCSU and hall union elections were held on March 11 amid allegations of huge irregularities and vote rigging.
