Suspended Dewanganj mayor sent to jail

A Dhaka court on Friday ordered to send Shah Newaz Shahanshah, the suspended mayor of Jamalpur's Dewanganj municipality, to jail, reports BSS.

Earlier, police produced him in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court on Friday afternoon.

After hearing both sides, Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Mohammad Jasim rejected his bail plea and send him to jail.

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Shah Newaz Shahanshah along with illegal drugs and cash from a hotel in the city on Thursday last.

A case was filed against him on December 17 following the occurrence of insulting the education official whom the mayor slapped.

Earlier on December 16, the mayor along with his companions went to the local Shaheed Minar on the Dewanganj Govt High School premises to place wreaths when the education official was announcing names of different organizations according to the list.

But, the mayor became angry when the name of the municipality came at number five.

For this reason, at one stage, Shahanshah slapped the education official amid huge public gathering.
