Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud said on Monday Tarique Rahman orchestrated the monstrous grenade attack on Awami League rally on August 21, 2004, with the consent of his mother and BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, reports BSS.

"Khaleda Zia was in power at the time of the attack and her son Tarique was the main driving force in notorious Hawa Bhaban. They tried to cover up the matter after the attack. That is why Khaleda too should be brought to justice for her role over the incident or else the trial would remain incomplete," he said at a discussion in the city.

The discussion was organised by Bangabandhu Sangskritik Jote (BSJ) at National Press Club. Presided over by BSJ adviser Chittaranjan Das, it was also addressed, among others, by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) secretary general Shaban Mahmud, Dhaka Journalists Union (DUJ) general secretary Sohel Haider Chowdhury and Awami League leader Balaram Poddar.

The AL publicity and publication secretary said the accused in the August 21 grenade attack case too have confessed before the court that Tarique was involved in planning

the attack.

"Their main aim was to eliminate Awami League along with its president Sheikh Hasina," he added.
