FE Report | September 25, 2021 00:00:00

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has sued three individuals including a former caretaker of 250-bed Kushtia General Hospital for their alleged involvement in embezzling around Tk 11 million in the name of purchasing equipment for the hospital.

The accused are: former caretaker (retired) of the hospital Dr Md Abu Hasanuzzaman, former assistant repairer and training engineer (retired) of National Electro-Medical Equipment Maintenance Workshop & Training Centre AHM Abdus Kuddus, and Messrs Paragon Enterprise Proprietor Md Zahedul Islam.

Deputy Director of ACC Dhaka office Md Sahidur Rahman on Thursday evening filed the case with the commission's Kushtia office as per sections 409/109 under Penal Code and section 5(2) of under Prevention of Corruption Act, 1947.

The trio in collusion with each other awarded work order to Messrs Paragon Enterprise during the fiscal year 2018-2019 for supplying some equipment without inviting any tender, according to the case statement.

Besides, the equipment were purchased through illegal means at higher prices than the market rates as the hospital authority didn't carry out any market assessment before approving the order.

By doing so, the accused misappropriated Tk 11,035,970 from the hospital's fund.
