Senior Awami League (AL) leader Tofail Ahmed today urged the main opposition to return to the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) deserting the politics of conflicts, saying that the opposition's main task in parliamentary democracy is to pinpoint the government's faults, reports BSS.
"Desert the politics of conflicts, join parliament and raise your demands there". In parliamentary democracy, the government will carry out development activities while the opposition will pinpoint its faults," said AL's advisory committee member Tofail Ahmed while addressing a discussion at the National Press Club here.
Bangabandhu Academy organised the discussion in memory of AL leader Abdur Razzak, one of the key organizers of the liberation war. Chaired by AL leader Mozaffar Hossain Paltu the discussion was addressed, among others, by AL presidium member Satish Chandra Roy, Barrister Amir-ul-Islam, general secretary of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Muzahidul Islam Selim, Pankaj Bhattacharjee and Dr Abdul Mannan Chowdhury.
Addressing the discussion as chief guest, Tofail laid emphasis on strengthening the Election Commission (EC), saying that the caretaker government system would not be required if a strong EC is constituted through discussion and mutual understanding.
During the last three years, parliamentary by-elections in Bogra, Habiganj and Brammanbaria and city corporation elections in Chittagong, Narayanganj and Comilla were held in a peaceful and neutral manner, he added.
"Awami League has proved its neutrality in holding peaceful elections," he added. Terming Abdur Razzak as a very efficient and intelligent organizer, Tofail said the Mujib Bahini under the able leadership of Abdur Razzak played a very important role during the liberation war.
