Trials of graft cases against Hasina, family begin

A Dhaka court on Wednesday began recording witness depositions in three more corruption cases filed against ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family members, and others on charges of abusing power in the acquisition of plots in Rajuk's Purbachal New Town Project.

The family members include Hasina's sister Sheikh Rehana, Rehana's daughters Azmina Siddiq and British MP Tulip Siddiq, and son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby.

Judge of the Special Court no 4 in Dhaka, Md Robiul Alam, recorded depositions from three Anti-Corruption Commission officials, who are also plaintiffs of the cases, on the first day of proceedings.

ACC Public Prosecutor Md Tarikul Islam confirmed the court order to the reporters.

Earlier on August 11, Special Court 5 in Dhaka recorded witness depositions in three other corruption cases filed against Hasina, her daughter Saima Wazed Putul, and son Sajeeb Wazed Joy on charges of the same allegations.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) lodged six separate cases in between January 12 to January 14 with its Dhaka Integrated District Office-1 over alleged irregularities in the plot allocation.

ACC Deputy Director Md Salahuddin, also the complainant, gave his statement before the Special Judge's Court 4 in Dhaka in the case filed against 17 people including Hasina, Rehana, and Tulip.

The same court recorded the statement of ACC Assistant Director and complainant of the case Afnan Jannat Keya in another graft case filed against 18 people, including Hasina and her nieces, Azmina and Tulip.

In the third case, the complainant, SM Rashedul Islam, also an assistant director of the ACC, submitted his statement before the same court.
