Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman said his party has no disagreement with the interim government regarding the ongoing reform process.
He, however, said the reforms would be meaningless, if people's necessity and expectations are not fulfilled.
He made the comments at the annual general meeting (AGM) of (a faction) of the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) at the National Press Club on Monday, where he virtually joined from London.
"BNP thinks that there should be an arrangement for holding the general election within a logical timeframe along with carrying out the reforms. No government could remain in power without people's votes," Tarique Rahman said.
"At least six journalists embraced martyrdom while fighting against the fascist Sheikh Hasina regime during the July-August mass uprising."
"More than 2,000 students and people were killed following the directives of the absconding fascist Sheikh Hasina. Around 400 leaders and activists of our party were also killed during the movement."
"Awami League and democracy are rivals. Different types of conspiracy have been started to destroy our democracy. But, the evil force (AL and Sheikh Hasina) would never come back to Bangladesh," he asserted.
DUJ organising secretary Sayeed Khan moderated the event, presided over by its president Shahidul Islam.
BNP standing committee member Dr A Z M Zahid Hossain, senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami secretary general Mia Golam Parwar, Jatiya Press Club president Hasan Hafiz and general secretary Ayub Bhuiyan, secretary general of a faction of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) Kader Gani Chowdhury, and general secretary of a faction of DUJ Khorshed Alam were present, among others, on the occasion.
