$150m World Bank loan for country's job market

Sunday, 19 December 2010

FE Report
The World Bank (WB) will provide US$150 million loan for Bangladesh's employment generation schemes for the extreme poor under a loan deal signed with the government Saturday.
The programme will create employment in rural areas for the extreme poor during the lean season, and is expected to generate 200 million person-days of employment over a three-year period.
World Bank Country Director Ms. Ellen Goldstein and Economic Relations Division (ERD) secretary under the finance ministry M Musharraf Hossain Bhuiyan signed the agreement.
The scheme will target both the poorest upazilas and the poorest households across the country. It will address seasonal poverty by allowing the poorest to earn money.
The programme will create employment for day laborers, particularly for vulnerable women, who are often out of work during the lean season.
Despite considerable progress in poverty reduction in the past twenty years, many of the poorest women are still without employment. The programme will ensure that the poorest women make up at least one-third of those employed, the Washington-based lender said.
